Active Pyrenees

6 Days

The mountains of the Pyrenees stretch from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Mediterranean Sea in the east. They form an awe-inspiring natural border between France and Spain and are an ideal destination for anybody needing a dose of activity on their trip to France.

Come summer or winter, the possibilities for an active break in the Pyrenees are endless. Our favourite area is the very accessible central Pyrenees, where the climate is a winning combination of the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Not too dry, not too wet, not too hot, not too cold.

There are so many things that we love about the Pyrenees mountains. Unlike their bigger brother the Alps, they remain relatively unspoiled and have retained a charming authenticity all of their own. With Spain ‘just next door’, there’s a fascinating melting pot of cultures, traditions and even language in this part of France which we will help you to experience.

The wildlife is exceptional in the Pyrenees. There’s a growing population of brown bears and you’re likely to see chamois, ibex and countless birds of prey if you venture up into the mountains.

This is a single centre, fully flexible itinerary based in the lovely old spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon in the heart of the Pyrenees.

These are suggestions for your active  break to the Pyrenees and will form the basis for the personalised itinerary that Your Personal France will create for you. If you have a specific activity that you’d like to do just let us know and we’ll incorporate it into your itinerary.

Other possibilities include multi day guided hiking or horse trekking in the mountains and road cycling breaks.

We suggest you fly into Toulouse or Tarbes/Lourdes airports from where you can hire a car.

The price for this active break in the Pyrenees will depend on your accommodation choice, the number of people, the time of year and what activities you’d like to do

Your Personal France can incorporate elements of this itinerary with any of the other trips on the website to create a complete trip to France.

Day 1 :

What better way to explore the wilder corners of the mountains than in the company of one of our expert local guides. They'll take you off the beaten track to places only known to the locals.
Here you may see some of the exceptional wildlife of the area and may even be lucky enough to see tracks of the elusive brown bear!
Our guides will delight in sharing with you their knowledge and passion for their 'hood. Learn about the local history and the pastoral life of days gone by.
Distance and ascent on these hikes will always take into account your fitness level

Enjoy a beautiful mountain hike up to one of the guarded mountain refuges for a complete off-grid experience.
The mountain refuges are always in the most spectacular settings. They are staffed by passionate locals who will prepare a delicious evening meal for you using only the freshest local products. It's eaten around a big table in the company of your fellow hikers and mountaineers.
The communal bunk rooms are perfectly comfortable and many refuges also have the luxury of a hot shower!

Following our expert local guidance and advice, explore the marked hiking trails that surround the refuge before returning back down to the valley floor. Look out for vultures and eagles, chamois and ibex as well as those little characters, the marmots.

Join our local expert for a day on the rock exploring the via ferrata and rock climbing in the valleys. All equipment will be provided and the level will take account of your previous experience.

Day 5 :
River fun

In late Spring and early Summer, the rivers that flow down from the high mountains are super-charged with snowmelt. If you love watersports then you'll be in heaven in the Pyrenees!
Choose from river rafting, kayaking, river boarding and even canyoning.

After those action-packed few days, treate your tired muscles to a session in the only natural hammam in Europe, the Vaporarium. Or discover the amazing thermal pools of Balnea in the Louron Valley with their unbeatable views of the snow-capped mountains.
