From prehistoric caves through to Greek settlements, Roman ruins to spectacular 11th C Cathar castles, numerous medieval forts and beautiful abbeys, a week exploring this corner of SW France will leave you amazed and awestruck in equal measure.

Historic experiences

It’s the Medieval period that left the biggest impression on this area and the Cathars and Knights Templar in particular.

Through selected guided visits, our local experts will share their extensive knowledge with you to help you better understand this turbulent episode in France’s history.

You’ll dig beneath the tourist face of Carcassonne, the largest surviving medieval walled city in Europe, now a UNESCO world heritage site.

Tour the vineyard area of the south of the Aude department and visit the ruins of Cathar castles such as Cucugnan, Queribus and Peyrepetuse. Be sure to wear your walking shoes!

Visit the hilltop village of Rennes-le-Chateau, formerly the site of a Prehistoric encampment and later a Roman colony before playing an important role in Cathar history at the start of the 13th C.

Dip into the Ariege department and discover the Medieval town of Mirepoix, the impressive chateau at Foix and the Cathar castle ruins of Roquefixade and Montsegur.

Finally, learn about the influence of the Benedictine monks through a visit to the impressive Fontfroide abbey near Narbonne.

This single centre, fully flexible itinerary is based in Carcassonne and is the basis from which your own personal itinerary will be created.

We suggest you fly into Toulouse, Carcassonne or Perpignan from where you can hire a car.

Combine some of the historical visits proposed in this itinerary with wine tastings and vineyard visits in the area and maybe some foodie experiences too.
