The Languedoc area of the Occitanie region in SW France has a complex and fascinating history which dates back to neolithic times. Our proposed historic Languedoc itinerary will satisfy even the most ardent amateur history buff!

From prehistoric caves through to Greek settlements, Roman ruins to spectacular 11th C Cathar castles, numerous medieval forts and beautiful abbeys, a week exploring this corner of SW France will leave you amazed and awestruck in equal measure.

Historic experiences

It’s the Medieval period that left the biggest impression on this area and the Cathars and Knights Templar in particular.

Through selected guided visits, our local experts will share their extensive knowledge with you to help you better understand this turbulent episode in France’s history.

You’ll dig beneath the tourist face of Carcassonne, the largest surviving medieval walled city in Europe, now a UNESCO world heritage site.

Tour the vineyard area of the south of the Aude department and visit the ruins of Cathar castles such as Cucugnan, Queribus and Peyrepetuse. Be sure to wear your walking shoes!

Visit the hilltop village of Rennes-le-Chateau, formerly the site of a Prehistoric encampment and later a Roman colony before playing an important role in Cathar history at the start of the 13th C.

Dip into the Ariege department and discover the Medieval town of Mirepoix, the impressive chateau at Foix and the Cathar castle ruins of Roquefixade and Montsegur.

Finally, learn about the influence of the Benedictine monks through a visit to the impressive Fontfroide abbey near Narbonne.

This single centre, fully flexible itinerary is based in Carcassonne and is the basis from which your own personal itinerary will be created.

We suggest you fly into Toulouse, Carcassonne or Perpignan from where you can hire a car.

Combine some of the historical visits proposed in this itinerary with wine tastings and vineyard visits in the area and maybe some foodie experiences too.

Itinerary

Your stay will commence with a delve into the intricate and rich history of Carcassonne, the largest surviving medieval walled city in Europe. Your expert guide's knowledge of the history of the cité is unsurpassed.
Through either a scheduled or a private tour, you will gain a thorough understanding of how life in this area has evolved from Roman Times through to present day.
But don't worry, as you're on holiday, the historical tour will be interspersed with a healthy amount of sitting around in the Languedoc sunshine, drinking some of the locally produced wine!

Today's escorted tour will take you west, via the historic medieval village of Mirepoix through to Foix, the main town of the Ariege department.
After lunch in the shadow of the impressive chateau you'll drive back via Roquefixade and the impressive Montsegur on its rocky pog.

A self-guided visit to the Mediterranean coast and the beautifully preserved Abbaye de Fontfroide near Narbonne

Head to the south of the Aude department today to discover the ruins of the Cucugnan, Queribus and Peyrepetuse Cathar castles.
On the way back, stop off at Rennes-le-Chateau and Alet-les-Bains to learn about the Knights Templar movement of the 13th century

Day 5 :
Lastours

For the final day of your historic Languedoc tour you'll head north to explore the 'four castles of Lastours', an exceptional, thought provoking site.
