Think of Burgundy and it’s the regions fabulous wines that will spring to mind. But Burgundy is also a foodie’s paradise, rich in gastronomical delights that range from mustard to blackcurrants to chocolate. Our Burgundy for foodies trip outline will give you a good taste of the area.

Mustard

Everybody has heard of Dijon mustard but the Fallot family in Beaune have been making the far superior Burgundy speciality ‘moutarde de Dijon’ since 1840? They are the only true Moutarde de Bourgogne producers left in Burgundy and create their mustard from seeds grown in the region which are milled by traditional stone mills. You are guaranteed to view mustard in a whole new light after visiting their fascinating museum and production facility.

Blackcurrants

Burgundy is also the centre of blackcurrant or ‘cassis’ production in France. Here, it is transformed into such delicious products as the famous creme de cassis liqueur which goes into that champagne aperitif Kir Royale. Our Burgundy for Foodies trip will incorporate a self-guided visit to a museum at which you’ll learn all about the historical and agricultural aspects of growing the fruit. Enjoy tastings of that creme de cassis and also numerous other syrups, spirits and liqueurs.

Cookery Workshop

If you’d like to learn to cook one of the traditional dishes of Burgundy or maybe some more modern Burgundian cuisine, then a morning’s private cookery class in the professional kitchen of a French chef (course is in English) will tick your boxes.

You’ll be welcomed into his home in a famous wine village for a fun and educational class. Your day will include a three course lunch  followed by a guided tour of the famous vineyards & villages of the Cote de Nuits. Naturally you will stop for an excellent cellar visit where you’ll taste village to grand cru wines too.

Chocolate and Wine

There are numerous artisanal chocolate makers in Burgundy who create some divine chocolate goodies. Chocolate and Burgundy wine is a match made in heaven if paired correctly. Be guided by an expert and you will see how it’s done during a fun-filled day in the vineyards.

Itinerary

You'll start your Burgundy for foodies stay with a very special cookery workshop in the heart of the Medieval town of Beaune.

It's a full day of exploring, cooking, and tasting designed to introduce you to the delightful gastronomic culture of the region. It will start with a morning tour of Beaune market during which you'll meet the produces of some of the food you will be using in your class.

This will be followed by a hands-on cooking class in which you'll learn classic French culinary techniques. Once you have finished cooking you'll enjoy a seven-course lunch which will include a local cheese course, and wine pairings hand-selected from the owner's wine shop.

Today is a fun and enjoyable fully guided day in which you'll learn about pairing different types and styles of fabulous Burgundy wine with chocolate created by a local artisanal chocolate maker.

The day begins in the Cote de Beaune vineyards where you'll taste some famous chardonnays & pinots at small family owned wineries followed by lunch at one of the best restaurants where you'll sample some superb regional cuisine.

After a tour of the grand cru vineyards & villages in the afternoon you will begin your superb wine & chocolate tasting after which you will naturally have the opportunity to buy both.

On this self-guided day you'll discover a unique facility, the Cassissium. Set in the heart of the Côte des Nuits vineyards near Nuits Saint Georges, this centre is dedicated to Burgundy's emblematic fruit, the blackcurrant.

Through the permanent exhibition, a projection room, a tasting area and a shop, you will learn all about the historical and agricultural aspects of the blackcurrant as well as its uses in medicine, perfumery and gastronomy.

The highlight of the visit will be a guided tour in English of the company Védrenne’s liqueur factory. It's an amazing way to discover the full process involved in transforming the humble blackcurrant into that delicious liqueur, creme de cassis.

In the afternoon, visit a producer of Burgundy's emblematic soft cow's milk cheese, Epoisses. Three generations of cheesemakers have been producing this cheese here and you will have the chance to view the production process through a full height glass window.

A video in English will help you to understand the process. Your visit will be rounded off with a tasting of their 5 different cheeses from mild to strong flavoured with a glass of Burgundy wine or fruit juice and bread.

Take a guided morning walking tour of the Medieval town of Beaune and learn about its rich history.

In the afternoon, visit the fascinating 'moutarderie' of the Fallot family who have been producing mustard since 1840. It is the only place to produce authentic Moutarde de Bourgogne from seeds grown in Burgundy and milled by traditional stone mills.

Through a sophisticated interactive environment you'll learn all about how mustard seeds are transformed into this delicious Burgundy mustard. There is a comprehensive tasting area too which is sure to surprise you.

In the evening, enjoy a delicious meal in a Michelin starred restaurant to round off your gastronomic stay in the area.
